The Racketeer

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five.

His body was found in the small basement of a lakeside cabin he had built himself and frequently used on weekends. When he did not show up for a trial on Monday morning, his law clerks panicked, called the FBI, and in due course the agents found the crime scene. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies – Judge Fawcett and his young secretary.

I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why.

I am a lawyer, and I am in prison.

It’s a long story.

Rud says…

The John Grishman of yore has resurfaced with this book. Just when I am beginning to doubt that he is still capable of creating works of the same calibre as his earlier outputs, he came up with this book that is so engrossing I am sure his wayward fans would be resurrected. To say that this has come in the most opportune time is an understatement.

The Racketeer is by far one of the best John Grisham books I have read. Whilst it does take some time to get started and there are still pacing issues (just as I think there are in all of his novels) this book not only kept me reading but actually had me gripped all the way through.

This is the story of a man wrongfully imprisoned and his efforts to get even with a government agency that lied to imprison him. After hearing his story it is easy to side with Malcom Bannister because I could not imagine what I would do if I found myself in his position. His life is turned upside down for no better reason than he was unknowingly involved in a crime and to put the nail in the coffin he was lied to repeatedly by the FBI who just wanted another arrest.

All the way through this book there was a high level of tension as you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Grisham brilliantly keeps you guessing all the way through the book and though the ending wasn’t exactly hard to see coming, there were plenty of times in the novel when you are almost sure you’ve gotten it wrong.

All in a all this was a highly enjoyable book and definitely one of the best produced by this author.
